Seamless Zipper Installation

Conquer your zipper fears! You don't need a sewing machine or even a needle & thread to install a zipper in your handknits. This process turns your zipper into a knittable object for a stunning and impeccable finish. For this course, be sure to have your materials at your side. This is a hands-on course that goes from working out the math (just a wee bit!) to determine how many stitches you will need to pick up to actually installing a zipper onto your swatches in two separate ways.

Required Skills

  • Knitting and purling

  • This course is perfectly suitable for beginning knitters

    techniques included

  • turning your zipper into a knittable object

  • two styles of joining your zipper & buttonband

  • picking up and knitting stitches

  • three-needle bind-off

  • calculating buttonband stitches based on your personal stitch to row gauge ratio

  • fixing three-needle bind-off misses

Required Materials

  • Knitpicker Tool & 5”/12.5 cm long Zipper (available for purchase as a course materials bundle from kate)

  • two swatches that are at least 5”/12.5 cm tall and 2”5 cm wide, with at least 1 stockinette selvedge stitch on each side; these swatches can be knit for class or can be recycled from a previously swatched project.

  • yarn: scraps of yarn that are the same weight or lighter than what was used in your swatch; if your finished project is bulky or heavier, you must use a yarn in worsted weight as bulky yarn is not suitable for this technique

  • needles: a minimum of 3 dpn’s or sets of Circular needles in the size used for your swatch, or one size smaller

  • pencil & paper

  • Knitters tools: scissors, darning needle, measuring tape, removable stitch markers if your swatch is taller than 5”/12.5 cm
